More hometown Cincinnati news... A-Line magazine is the latest addition to the scene, with a mix of fashion and lifestyle coverage. I love the way they take some pretty highbrow runway shots as inspiration (philosophy di alberta ferretti!) and show you how to create a similar look.

Recently they featured designers who grew up in Cincinnati, or attended the fashion program at DAAP... which includes me!

Here's their writeup below... i'm very happy that, upon A-Line's prompting, I finally remembered to discuss inspiration, and how and where to find it. Several people who were foundational in my turn to fashion design (Beata Kania, Anthony Muto) always emphasized that you have to keep your eyes open and find your inspiration in everything!

Tea with Mary Baskett

Last night I attended a talk on Japanese fashion by Mary Baskett, who began collecting designer fashion by Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and Yohji Yamamoto back in the 1970s at the very beginning of their careers.
After a fabulous introduction by curator Cynthia Amneus, Mary spoke about 6 of her newest acquisitions, all pieces she has purchased since the last major exhibition of her collection at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C.
Mary pointed out the "similarities in spirit" among Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto, and the contrasts between the work of all three of her favorite designers. Then, Cindy spoke about the history of these designers and showed some of the newest work of each... and demonstrated the "origami" folded dress which Mary is wearing in the photo at left (photo taken at Japan Fashion Now exhibit at FIT).

Last night I spoke with Amy Scalia, founder of CincyChic, to discuss the Cala Ossidiana collection and all our upcoming plans for Cincinnati Fashion Week and beyond!

Cincinnati Fashion Week Starts

The Cala Ossidiana team has departed NYC this week for a visit to Designer Anne Pachan's hometown of Cincinnati - for a week of all things fashion!
Tonight, we'll be at the Cincinnati Fashion Week kickoff party downtown, chatting with CincyChic girl-about-town Amy Scalia about this summer's collection, inspiration, and what's coming up soon.

Tomorrow is the menswear CFW event at one of Cincinnati's breweries. "Back in the day" Cincinnati had hundreds of local breweries, with about half of the downtown male population employed in the manufacture, delivery, or serving of beer! The Christian Moerlein brewery now represents this longstanding Cincinnati tradition and is hosting the menswear fashion event.

The Cala Ossidiana team, together with designers Laura Dawson and Azhand Shokohi, will visit the DAAP campus to work with current fashion students on their final collections to be presented at a fashion show next month.

Wednesday brings Tea with Mary Baskett. A curator of Japanese art at the Cincinnati Art Museum and an avid collector of Japanese designer clothing from Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and others, Mary will give a talk on Japanese fashion traditions and innovations. She'll also discuss other aspects of Japanese culture, including, of course, their very detailed tea ceremonies.

On Thursday, Landor Associates, a large Cincinnati-based graphic design firm, gives a presentation on the comingling and co-inspiration of fashion and graphic design - professionals from each area are inspired by and play off the work of the other, especially in contemporary fashion of the past few decades. Graphic + fashion doesn't ONLY mean very clean, minimal fashions... graphic designers, fashion designers, and other design professionals and fine artists all study the same basic principles of color, line, and proportion which can be applied to all fashions.

The Cincinnati Fashion Fund launches on Friday night at Via Vite! This fundraiser will help support designers working in Cincinnati and promoting the fashion industry within Cincinnati, creating a vibrant design community, and the opportunity for more and more events like those happening throughout the week!

Finally, Saturday night is the big show! 12 designers showcase their latest collections, with select items available for immediate purchase. Don't miss out!

I just commented on Fashionista for the first time.

They ran an article on Michelle Obama wearing McQueen to a state dinner recently, and she looks amazing! Not trying to be snarky, but she looked waaaay more gorgeous than most of the stars at the Golden Globes! What do you think? Do you wish some of those celebrities would up the ante and stop wearing dresses that they might have worn 10 years ago?

Any suggestions for the celebs? Or, any suggestions for fabulous things Michelle Obama should be wearing? I'd love to see her enjoying a Fuschia Knot-Back Maillot in Hawaii, but I'm biased, LOL.

She travels to Guatemala every few months and works with local artisans to weave these fantastic colors. I visited the famous Takashimaya http://www.takashimaya-ny.com/Japanese department store in New York last week - they have lost out to this recession and they will be closing the store. If you have never been, you must go, just to see what it once was. This store is absolutely gorgeous - women were taking photographs of the vaulted ceiling on the first level which used to hold the floral department, nearly in tears. The tea cafe is exceptional.
Everything in the store is now 40% off - I picked up a few small things for gifts, because everyone should have something from this amazing store. All the beautiful objects there will be gone quickly, but there is still a chance for specialty loose teas, some of the serving pieces, and the unique baby clothing and accessories. Go as soon as you can and good luck!

an inspiration, a tribute

This post is long overdue, as everyone in the fashion industry has been shocked and mourning the death of Alexander McQueen for some time now. If you have not yet viewed the tribute video on his company's website, it really is a must-see. This man represented one of the most extreme incarnations of fashion, imagery, art, and culture - it's amazing to see how outrageous his work could be, yet still have such an intense connection to our collective culture to elicit response from people far and near.
I would love to see an exhibit at either the Met Costume Institute or the Victoria and Albert Museum that truly captures and demonstrates how this man has inspired so many.

Gallery Night Inspiration

Thursday night is the night for gallery openings in NYC, and tonight was especially good. Before visiting the first gallery, I stopped at one of my favorite stores in soho - Kiosk. I found this second-floor store by sheer luck one night a few years ago - it was contemporary furniture fair week, soho was full of furniture design parties, and in between all the big, publicized events at Knoll, Desiron, and Cappellini, there were a few smaller, more intimate, almost secret... keggers! A small sign, printed on plain 8 1/2 x 11" paper -in an impeccably cool font- quietly announced the party upstairs to those who happened to look up on their way to and from the other events.
The store remains hidden yet well-known, and they now also curate a shop-in-shop at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum. Why are they so special? They travel to a different part of the world every three months, and pick up everyday items that are completely ORDINARY to the residents, but look like a witty design objet to the uninitiated - that's us!
This makes it the best place to shop for gifts, and several of my friends will now have little stocking-stuffer christmas gifts with a very unique origin.

On to the galleries: my intented destination was Ennagon gallery, an exhibit curated by my friend Giulia. The artist, Natalie Tyler, created giant "cocoons". The natural structures, each about 7 feet high, were suspended from the ceiling and swaying slightly as people walked by. They also actually respond to the presence of people in the room, walking around them and moving closer and further away. The gallery was darkened, and a warm glow emanated from within each cocoon - but only when a person approached and was in close proximity to the sculptures.
Here's the gallery's description:
"The great Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis ("Zorba the Greek") tells us that when he was a boy, he noticed a cocoon stuck to a tree with a butterfly that was about to be born. He waited a while, but it was taking so long, so he decided to warm the cocoon with his breath. The butterfly finally emerged.
"Diapause" is a deepened state of hibernation and slowed metabolic function that happens in reaction to unfavorable external forces when an entity is gestating, to protect itself. Sometimes it survives and sometimes it aborts. Natalie Tyler uses the concept of cocoon as a metaphor for the emotional, philosophical, and physical states of transformation that occur during life-stage transitions...."

The already perfect evening was then ended with a quick run to the gallery across the street - showing Miro and Dali!

Uniting Against Lung Cancer

November is lung cancer month, and this year it has become very important to me. My mother was diagnosed last fall with "never-smoker" lung cancer. This type of cancer is much more common than most people realize, and is very difficult to catch.
Joan's Legacy: Uniting Against Lung Cancer is an organization dedicated to fundraising for research on diagnosis, treatments, and a cure. Cala Ossidiana is contributing to their efforts - attendees at the annual benefit dinner will have a chance to bid on TWO of our bathing suits from the spring 2010 collection - with all proceeds going to the cause! If you'd like to be there for the evening, or learn about any of the other events happening nationally, check out their event page.

Rockin' Fashion

Love that someone has tapped into the background of Cala Ossidiana - Irene of the Irenebriation blog has written it far better than I ever could - with the help of her brother's childhood box of minerals from Italy. She has the rough-cut obsidian stone in the box - it's not only our namesake, but the deep black shiny rock glinting in the light is the inspiration for our new lava nail polish. She also has the sulfur, and a crystallized malachite which is an amazing color! It's a touch more green than the turquoise in our summer 2009 line, but we have that shade coming up for resort 2010!
Irene has a knack for capturing and exploring the inspiration behind the line, and has paired the description with a montage of film clips by Michelangelo Antonioni, one of Italian film's greats.

Glamour Blog is my new must-read!

Looks like the friend-of-a-friend who snapped Summer's pic at the beach last week writes for Glamour! Joanna has a blog that is so much fun to read, and you can check in a couple times a day for something new that makes you smile.... some of the comments are hilarious! I love the tan-lines debate because it's funny how worked up people get about it. For our knot-back maillot, the subject of so much debate, you can just move the adjustable straps around a little when you're lying on the beach, the same way you would unhook or untie a bandeau top with a wide strap across the back. (not to mention our bandeau has a big silver clasp that is not only gorgeous, it's also a lot easier to re-hook on your own than some little ties!)

Also love the discussions about which bathing suit is best to wear on a beach "date", and Joanna's musings on her upcoming wedding, celebrities, style, and makeup... and her coworkers at glamour write in as well - i had forgotten how funny "jake" is, giving the guy's perspective on all the things we girls obsess over.

I love the ocean, but I’m not much of a beach person. Maybe I should clarify… I’m not much of a crowded beach person. I like it when there’s only a few people around, so going late in the day is my preference. The sun is low in the sky, the sand has cooled, and the beach is clear. Yesterday was my day off so I met some friends down at the beach and spent a few hours playing frisbee, wading, watching surfers, and having some girl time.

It also gave me the opportunity to wear my new Cala Ossidiana swimsuit. I know you’ve noticed that one pieces are experiencing a comeback right now, which personally, I think is long overdue. Do you remember all of those months ago when I gushed about how amazing Cala Ossidiana swimwear was? After 20 or so years wearing only 2 pieces I bought my first one piece from the brand, and I am a happy girl. Anne’s pieces are well-designed, sexy, and super comfortable. I wore my black knot maillot yesterday and couldn’t have been more happy. Never thought I’d post a photo of myself in a swimsuit on my blog. But here I am. Love the suit, Anne!!! You’re genius!

Black knot maillot from Cala Ossidiana. I kept my hair off of my face with a turqoise headb and a simple knot. I love the idea of wearing jewelry on the beach but this is the Jersey Shore not Miami Beach, so I kept it simple with my vintage silver hoops.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, she shares a basic but essential philosophy with me - you must be able to find inspiration absolutely anywhere!
That said, whether looking to the treasures of the botanical gardens or towards more unusual subjects, Lillian can take that inspiration from anywhere and create something beautiful. A surprisingly see-through bathing suit is usually a bad thing.

But not always.

Take Cala Ossidiana, for example. The luxe swimwear line, which makes excellent use of peek-a-boo mesh, is downright sexy.

The string bikini has strategically located sheer fabric on both the top (placed safely above the nip) and the bottom, which is asymmetrical and has a double tie on one side. Here's his personal work: The Ballerina Project. He photographs ballerinas in the beautiful yet industrial landscape of New York. After producing his first book last year, he is now auctioning off prints of some of the most amazing shots. It is unbelieveable to see what beautiful images Dane can create, and the stunning, graceful, and athletic poses the dancers are capable of. I love the image where she looks like she is about to fly over the fence out of the city!

I had a great night on Wednesday! My friend Suzy held a little
private shopping event for me in her home. Her place is so beautiful,
she was such an engaging hostess and there were a great group of
lovely, interesting people.
There were two topics that dominated my conversations through out the
evening. One, everyone seems to be obsessed with my deep blue and
lapis swim suits (like my double layer tank here) and two the fact
that my line is created domestically. My line, Cala Ossidiana is
designed and samples in New York and produced in Miami.
We had some women try swimsuits on. I wished that more would have
tried suits! I am forever thinking about creating situations to make
women comfortable enough to shed the work wear to get in that suit. My
PR people had the right idea… More wine!

Earthquake in Italy

The name Cala Ossidiana is inspired by an island beach in Italy, where volcanic obsidian glass poured down a mountainside towards the sea hundreds and thousands of years ago. While the volcano created a beautiful landscape, the eruption also created a lot of trauma and chaos for any people and animals on the island at the time.
Now we have a strong earthquake in central Italy, affecting a much larger and more populous area, and there are many people who need help. But, many people feel they don't know where to go to donate or how to assist... so here are some options recommended to me directly from friends in Italy.

So many people have checked out our website - www.calaossidiana.com - and have loved the look! Here are a few more details about the designers and artists involved in the creation of the site.

Sarah Miller, partner at MillerCormier graphic design, was in charge of the look and creation of the website. Her work and design counsel on the layout, interface (how we use the site) and appearance were invaluable! She walked me through choosing the font for the logo and making the different levels of the site - like when the "about" section pops up and it's ever-so-slightly textured background with a stingray / pebble-beach inspired pattern she created. (love that!) She's so detail oriented, she even made sure that when you click on the "about" or "contact" sections, that word picks up the bright turquoise blue that was an inspiration for the line.

Knot-back Maillots

Intricate knots are the focal point of this one-piece maillot that covers yet highlights your figure. The knots create a very flattering shape in the back, and by simply tightening the spaghetti strap under the front bust you can adjust for size and length of the back straps.
light lining with bra cups at the bust. tie underneath the bust provides a little extra support - so this style is also available in a D cup.
Leg is a more of a hipster style. Spaghetti straps extend from the back knotwork around the hip to the front, creating a diagonal line and flattering V shape.
A special technique and placement was used for these knots so they are very comfortable to wear - even when lying down in the sun!
So many colors to choose from - black, bright turquoise, lapis and navy (see double layer tank photos).

the sheer inset triangle bikini

This has been the favorite of so many friends... taking the layering look to a new level with solid black lycra over sheer black mesh.
Triangle bikini with sheer mesh insets - perfectly placed into solid black stretch italian jersey. The finest quality sheer mesh feels more like chiffon, not at all like sports jerseys.
Note the side view photo to see both insets on the top - the side inset is very sexy, but the solid black is perfectly placed for coverage. Ties at neck and back for adjustment.
Bottoms have sheer inset at top front.... again, it dips down just enough to look sexy but the solid black gives coverage in all the right places. Gathering into side ties at front and back, allows for custom fit adjustment.

Cala Ossidiana swimwear will be featured in Cincinnati Magazine's May issue - watch this space!
The photoshoot was set at the DAAP design school on University of Cincinnati's campus... a very unusual building opened in 1997 that has NO RIGHT ANGLES! Yes, as in all the hallways are crooked... the building was designed by Peter Eisenman and now houses all the design departments.... photos here.
It was a fantastic graphic background for an indoor, mid-winter swimwear photoshoot, and several shots took advantage of the views of a nearby park. I graduated from DAAP and enjoyed visiting the university for this event.

Elizabeth and April were models from Seven Agency, which is the best model agency in Cincinnati and works with the fashion design students each year.

the double layer tank

here it is..... the original bathing suit of the first cala ossidiana collection. This double-layer onepiece was the jumping off point for the design of the whole line. Back in the early 80s, a 7 year old future swimwear designer was watching the older, taller, cooler teenage girls on the diving team. Those girls loved the tank bathing suits of the decade, and had multitudes of them - but the suits were too sheer. To get around this problem (and be allowed out of the house!) the teenage girls would wear 2 or 3 bathing suits at the same time..................which became the inspiration for the double-layer tank.
It's a sporty yet sexy look, created with a unique super-thin Italian jersey. The two layers intersect beautifully when worn together......... or each layer can be worn alone.
Deep plunge in a soft V at the front, while a sculpted X racerback rests in a low scoop at the back. Amazing cut is very flattering for the bum and legs - it's more bare like a European or Brazilian cut, but the line is perfectly placed to give just enough coverage. And it looks great on everyone!
These pieces are also perfect to wear as clothing, either both layers or just one, and were featured that way in the FORMnewyork spring 2009 fashion show.

Obsessed with all things "island"-y, I just visited this little Japanese restaurant in the East Village for the second time. I must need a vacation because I mis-read their poster as Go To Island instead of GOTO Island, which is the origin of their style of cooking! (I'm still not 100% sure which one it is, as their business card below looks a lot like my first interpretation, but I like it either way.)
While I know what I like, which included the pork belly with daikon and the guilty-pleasure gyoza, I'll leave the technical foodie talk to the experts at NY Times, NYC Crumbs, and UrbanDaddy. Perfect casual place to share smallplates with friends, and a pleaasant surprise for the friends who only know the sushi side of japanese food.

Cala Ossidiana - it's Italian for "Obsidian Beach" and is my personal name for the island that some of my family is from, Lipari. It's one of a group of tiny volcanic islands off the coast of Sicily, and they are gorgeous.
